As of May this year, the number of foreign students enrolled in Chiba Prefecture’s universities and other schools reached 18,664, up 2,724 from the previous year (a 17.1% increase). After a COVID-19-driven low of 9,504 in 2022, counts have remained in the tens of thousands since 2023, and this year marks the highest total since the survey began in 2019. The survey covered 176 institutions with campuses in the prefecture, and responses were received from all. By school type, 6,548 students were at specialized schools (up 1,915), 6,510 at universities and technical colleges (down 11), and 5,606 at Japanese language schools (up 820). By country/region, Nepal led with 5,048 (up 1,698), China was second with 4,958 (down 65), and Vietnam was third with 3,321.
