Chiba Prefecture's survey shows 18,664 foreign students enrolled in prefectural schools as of May 1, 2025, up about 17% from 2024, covering 176 universities and specialty schools with campuses in the prefecture. After a pandemic-driven drop to around 9,500 in 2022, the total nearly doubled by 2025, with large gains at vocational schools and Japanese-language schools. Nepal became the top country of origin with 5,048 students, overtaking China, while Sri Lanka and Myanmar also rose sharply. Among universities, Chiba University had 829 students and Josai International University 827. Officials say the results will inform policies to promote multicultural coexistence.
