To help foreign students unfamiliar with Japanese traffic rules ride safely, Kyoto Prefectural Police's Ukyo Ward held a traffic-safety lecture at Delta Driving School on September 30, with 15 students from the Kyoto Institute of Advanced Science in attendance. The session covered sign meanings, left-side riding, and a two-stage right turn demonstrated on a course to avoid truck blind spots. With Kyoto's foreign student population rising—last year topping 20,000 for the first time—the police said they will continue promoting traffic rules. An Indonesian student, Zan Dylan, said the session was very useful and he will be careful around large trucks. As of the end of August this year, bicycle-related accidents in Kyoto totaled 508, down 134 from last year, including 4 deaths, up 1. Ukyo Ward Traffic Division Chief Oba Taku said more sessions would help more students understand the rules and spread the knowledge to others.
