As of the end of June, Japan's total foreign residents stood at 3,956,619, up about 187,000 from six months earlier, setting a new record. Chinese residents topped 900,000 for the first time at 900,738, followed by Vietnam at 660,483 and Korea at 409,584. Permanent residents numbered about 932,090. Among visa statuses, Specified Skilled Worker Type 1 rose 17% to 333,123, while Type 2 climbed to 3,073 from 832; together they totaled 336,196. The number under the Technical Intern Training program declined 1.6% to 449,432. The government aims to accept up to 820,000 people under Types 1 and 2 combined by 2028.
