Japan's Immigration Services Agency said that as of the end of June the total number of foreign residents reached a record 3,956,619, with Chinese nationals at 900,738 and accounting for about a quarter of all foreigners. Over the past six months the Chinese resident total rose about 27,000, and over the past decade has grown about 234,000 since 2015. Among foreign residents, permanent residents are the largest group, followed by those in Technical/Humanities/International Services, Technical Intern, Study, and Specified Skilled Worker categories, with permanent residency most common among Chinese residents. The government also plans to tighten the Business Manager visa by raising the required capital from 5 million to 30 million yen and adding Japanese language, education, and experience criteria, effective on the 16th of this month.
