Tokyo police say Vegemeal Co. in Fukaya, Saitama, hired Indian workers on the engineer/specialist in humanities/international services visa to perform vegetable processing, violating immigration laws. The firm’s founder Ishii Makoto and Chowdri Hamid Hossein, a Bangladeshi national and HR director, were arrested, with the company referred for violation. Investigators say 186 foreigners worked there, with nine found to be ineligible for the visa status. Four Indian men at the plant were also arrested for submitting false visa applications; they deny using brokers to obtain the statuses.
