According to the Institute of International Education, new international students entering U.S. universities in the fall term fell 17% year over year, and the total number of international students enrolled also declined about 1%. The drop is attributed to stricter visa rules, including proposals to cap visa duration at four years. The IIE notes that last year about 1.2 million foreign students studied at U.S. colleges, delivering an economic impact of roughly $55 billion (about 8.5 trillion yen). Meanwhile, around 300,000 Americans studied abroad, up about 6%. In Japan, the number of students studying in Japan reached a record 11,217, ranking Japan as the fifth-largest destination for international study.
