Tohoku University in Sendai has decided to raise the annual tuition for international students from the 2027 academic year, citing higher costs of hosting foreign students. The tuition would rise from 537,800 to 900,000 yen, while domestic students' fees remain unchanged. Students enrolled before the raise will keep the current rate. The plan aims to differentiate from Japanese students, and the ministry has recently amended ordinances to allow national universities to set higher rates for international students. If Tohoku leads, the trend could spread to other institutions.
