Tohoku University announced that starting in 2027, annual tuition for international students will rise from 535,800 yen to 900,000 yen, about 1.7 times, for new entrants from April 2027; those who enrolled earlier or in doctoral programs will keep the current rate. The university cited rising costs from inflation and the need to improve the reception environment for students with different living habits. Although national university tuition caps exist, a 2024 reform allowed universities to set tuition freely. After being named a National International Excellence University in 2024, Tohoku University plans to boost international admissions and will use the higher revenue to improve the welcoming environment.
