Tohoku University said Monday that it will raise tuition for international students to 900,000 yen per year, about 1.7 times the fee for Japanese students, for undergraduates and master's entrants from fiscal 2027 onward. The higher fees will fund improvements to teaching and research environments and strengthen counseling and support services. National universities set a standard tuition of 535,800 yen with a 1.2x upper limit, and foreign students previously paid the same as Japanese students, but in 2024 the ministry lifted the cap for foreigners, enabling higher charges, a trend seen at many universities abroad.
