Tohoku University will raise the annual tuition for international students enrolling from 2027 to 900,000 yen, about 1.7 times the current 535,800 yen, with the extra revenue to strengthen support for international students. This move makes it the first national university to set tuition freely after the 2024 ministry rule change, and the university was named the first government-funded International Excellence Research University in 2024, with plans to expand overseas student recruitment.
