Tohoku University decided that from the 2027 academic year, the annual tuition for international students will be raised from 535,800 yen to 900,000 yen, citing higher costs of hosting international students. This marks the first time a national university differentiates tuition between Japanese and international students. The university says the extra revenue will be used to strengthen its international admissions and support systems, and notes it was recognized last year as the first International Excellence University with government backing of a 10 trillion yen fund.
